The Outback That Stopped Pretending

Wilderness is not a badge package. The Outback Wilderness gains ride height, factory all-terrain tires, revised gearing, skid protection and water-resistant upholstery, and gives up a little on-road polish to get them. It is the deepest Wilderness stock we hold of the three nameplates that offer it.

What Changes Against a Standard Outback

Ground Clearance

More of it, with the approach and departure angles to use it. The standard Subaru Outback sits at 8.7 inches for comparison.

All-Terrain Tires

Fitted at the factory rather than added at the dealer, which changes the grip and the highway noise together.

Dual-Function X-MODE

Snow/Dirt for gravel and packed dirt, Deep Snow/Mud for ground where a wheel can sink. X-MODE explained.

Durability Trim

Water-resistant upholstery and cladding, on the assumption something wet is going in the back.

It Keeps the Safety Award

The Outback holds the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ in standard and Wilderness form alike, under criteria that now include a vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention test. The winners list sets out what that takes.

The Other Two

The Forester Wilderness is shorter and taller with 9.2 inches of clearance; the Crosstrek Wilderness is the small one and the cheapest to run. All three sit in one list in the Wilderness inventory.

Offers, Trade and Financing

Current offers and incentives and the lease and finance specials are published as they change. The payment calculator does the math, value your trade puts a number on yours, and you can apply for financing before you come in.

Outback Wilderness Questions, Answered

Is it worth it over a standard Outback?

If you regularly leave pavement or park where the snow does not get cleared, yes. If you do not, the standard Subaru Outback rides better and uses less fuel, and there are far more of them here.

Do the all-terrain tires make it loud?

Noticeably more than the standard car on the highway, and that is the honest trade. Drive both on the same day — we keep them side by side.

What does dual-function X-MODE add?

A second setting. Snow/Dirt covers light snow, wet pavement, gravel and packed dirt; Deep Snow/Mud is for softer ground where the wheels can sink. X-MODE explained covers both.
